Seoul Metropolitan Government/ Seoul Design Foundation

1. Urban Space Improvement Bureau, Seoul Metropolitan Government

Seoul Metropolitan Government Urban Space Improvement Bureau is the administrative department that oversees the Seoul Biennale. It was launched in 2015 to improve the urban space of Seoul through the design and promotion of public urban projects and proposing relevant urban policies while preserving the history and locality of the city. Together with the Seoul City Architect and the Seoul Architects appointed by the Seoul Metropolitan Government, its major activities include consulting on the city’s urban projects, operating pilot projects, and coordinating with the Architectural Policy Committee and the Seoul Citizen Design Council. In addition, it provides educational programs to cultivate a better understanding of citizens and government officials about Seoul Metropolitan Government’s urban projects.

2. Seoul Design Foundation

Seoul Design Foundation was established in 2008 by the Seoul Metropolitan Government for the purpose of improving quality of life and enhancing the design competitiveness of Seoul through various design projects for citizens, designers, and local merchants. Seoul Design Foundation operates the Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP), Seoul Design Research Center, and organizes other important design events such as Seoul Fashion Week, Seoul Design Week, and the Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism.

3. Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism Division

Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism Division at the Seoul Design Foundation is the department that oversees the planning and operation of the Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism. Working with the co-directors of the Seoul Biennale, it manages the overall structure of the biennale, and oversees its numerous events. This division works to build the local/global, public/private, and academic networks, and develops international exchange programs as well as local engagement/citizen programs. It is also responsible for the public relations and archiving of the Biennale.
